Medical Supplies!

Over the past few weeks, I have been very lucky to have had donated some free medical supplies to take with me to Tanzania! Although the majority of these dressings are very useful, quite a few will probably not be much use. If you know anyone or are able to get hold of any bandages, syringes or sterile equipment I would be very very grateful!!!

If you would like to donate (which would be very much appreciated) here's the link. Thank you to everyone who has donated already, your support has been greatly appreciated!

Updates on Fundraising

Hey everyone!

Thought I would give you another update on how things are going. The company which I am working through have confirmed my place, and have given me a list of things I need to do. Need to pull my finger out and start working now! Got lots of needles to have, tablets to take, visas to get, flights to book and references and CV's to type!

I have a few fundraisers planned with the help of some really kind friends. Dates are yet to be confirmed but hopefully we will be having a sponsored wax, a male auction, a night out at Lola Lo's and clothes and book swaps.

Still to go are donations, please give as much or as little as you can. It really will be so appreciated and will go a long way!!! And I am also hoping to write an article in the EDP and ask businesses for donations.

And that's about it for now!

Please keep reading my blog, sharing it with other people and donating!!!! Every penny helps!

Tanzanian Adventure

So first of all I guess I should explain my reasons for writing this blog and tell you all a little bit about myself and why I want to do this, and also thank you for taking the time to read my blog.

So why should you donate? I am actually going to be working the whole time I am in Tanzania, seeing the results of your money in person, and helping to make a change to a lot people's lives. Your money will be implemented in practical and efficient ways, and I will make sure I regularly keep you posted on where your money has gone, who it is helping and what I am doing whilst out there.

So, about me!

I am a student at the University of East Anglia studying Nursing, which I am two years into. From the moment I started the course I had a burning desire to go on an elective placement in Malawi to liaise with Nursing students there and help out in two of the hospitals in the local area. Unfortunately this placement didn't pan out. Instead I am going to be venturing out to Tanzania for one month in August, to Dar Es Salaam.

Whilst on my nursing course, I have grown a real love for caring with people with HIV/AIDS, learning about the causes, the treatments and the people it effects, though in the UK the number of people with HIV/AIDS is significantly lower than those in Africa. This has lead me to want to find out more about the disease and care for a large number of people who unfortunately have it. I eventually would love to have a career in Africa, and for me this is my trial run to see if it is really what I want to do.

The UEA offers elective placements- placements which we get to choose anywhere in the world, in the field of our choice, and with the right documentation in place, I will be assessed on the work I do in Tanzania and this will contribute to my final mark for my degree. Once qualified in England, I would also like to work in operating theatres for a while, and the placement gives me the opportunity to experience aspects of theatre which I would not otherwise be able to experience in England. It is a valuable opportunity, and one I intend to seize with both hands.

Prior to this blog being created I have started creating fundraising ideas which I will be putting into place soon, and I have been working full time (48 hours a week night shifts) on top of my nursing course  to try and raise some money, and as a result have burned out and become physically knackered.  Despite doing this I am unable to raise enough, which is why I am kindly asking for your help.

In order for you to get an idea of what it is that your money will be going towards there is a link at the bottom of this blog, so you can see for yourself the work i will be doing, what your money will be going towards and how much it is that it costs. In total I will need to have approximately £3500 for the month. The programme itself will cost £2000 (4 weeks in Dar es Salaam plus the community placement), and this includes, food, accommodation and work at the hospital. The other £1500 I need I will be aiming to raise myself by working night shifts on top of my placement, car boot sales and fundraising and I will be earning this money to cover my flights, vaccinations, passport renewal, insurance, visa, cholera and malaria medications and any other pending costs which I will encounter.

I hope you will see this as a worthy cause. Please give anything as little or as much as you can. Anything and everything helps and thank you so much for taking the time to read this blog!
